Brussels is playing for time, Nuñez is backing down, Ankara is making its position clear

A weekly round-up of social media platforms, their activities and operating methods, the studies, reports and surveys that document them, as well as the measures taken by governments in Europe and North America. Published every Monday morning (Paris time).

How does CERIF’s weekly monitoring service work? Click to expand: what you see, where it comes from, the sources used, and the selection criteria.

What is it?

The Observatory publishes a weekly watch every Monday at 7 AM on Muslim Brotherhood networks and organized political Islam. You'll find 9 carefully selected articles on average from verified sources, organized by geographic zone (France, Europe, United States, Canada, Australasia).

How does it work?

  1. IN BRIEF (top): three paragraphs that give the week's significance - not a repetition of articles, but an analysis of convergences, shifts, silences.
  2. IN DETAIL (bottom): articles organized by region in clickable tabs. Click a zone to see only what's happening there.

Where does it come from?

The watch draws on a public list of about 125 sources maintained by CERIF: some forty specialised research centres (GWU Program on Extremism, ISGAP, Hudson Institute, Policy Exchange, AK Polis, DPI Austria, EM2C…) and some sixty press titles (France, Belgium, UK, US, Canada, Germany, Austria, Spain, Italy…), plus official sources: ministries, prefectures, courts, parliaments.

Every Monday an automated assistant reads the research centres one by one and sweeps the press and official sources through targeted searches, zone by zone. Some major dailies block automated reading; they are then covered by search rather than direct reading. A source-by-source coverage report is kept for each edition.

Selection criteria: each article must directly address Muslim Brotherhood networks or organised political Islam, date from less than two weeks ago, and link precisely to a primary source or an established press title. Aggregators and sites of uncertain reliability are excluded.

Who validates?

Nothing is published without review: each edition is proposed as a draft, then read and validated by CERIF's team before going online. The cycle combines systematic coverage with human editorial judgment.

France

  • The Home Secretary acknowledged that he had used “clumsy wording” during his speech on 12 March at the Grand Mosque of Paris, where he had spoken of “developing” and “raising awareness of” Islam. He reaffirmed his personal opposition to the veil for young girls whilst maintaining the course of his separatism bill, expected in late April in the Council of Ministers.

Europe

  • A report by the Belgian State Security Service, published in mid-April, acknowledges that the Muslim Brotherhood ultimately aim to establish an Islamic regime but concludes that they do not pose “an immediate threat”. The text directly contradicts the French report of May 2025, which identified Belgium as the European hub of the movement. Florence Bergeaud-Blackler sees this as a sign of the Belgian security services’ “helplessness” in the face of non-violent ideological subversion.

  • At a hearing before a Turkish parliamentary subcommittee on 2 April, the Diyanet outlined its strategy for circumventing European restrictions: rather than sending imams from Turkey, it now trains students from the diaspora locally through its International Theology Programme (UIP) and then redeploys them on local contracts. The scheme has built up a network of 1,243 graduates from 15 countries.

    Nordic Monitor · 16 April 2026

  • The Italian authorities have deported Imam Ali Kashif from Brescia following a hidden-camera investigation in which he was filmed justifying, on religious grounds, the marriage of girls as soon as they have their first period. The prefecture cited a threat to public order, against the backdrop of preparations for an Italian law against Islamist separatism.

    Middle East Forum · 4 April 2026

  • The Sánchez government has regularised the status of more than 500,000 undocumented migrants, granting them access to citizenship and subsequently to freedom of movement within the Schengen Area. Several analyses have raised concerns about the impact on the spread of Islamist networks across the EU.

United States

  • In a report authored by Steven Stalinsky, Executive Director of MEMRI, the think tank notes that the Muslim Brotherhood have already been designated as a terrorist organisation by three Arab countries (Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia) but not by Washington. The study documents the operational presence of the Brotherhood’s networks in the United States, Europe (France, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Ireland) and as far afield as Argentina, and sets out seven recommendations for coordinated US federal action.

  • The Department of Justice has announced the guilty plea of Muhammad Shahzeb Khan, a Pakistani national residing in Canada, who has admitted to attempting to enter the United States to carry out an Islamic State-inspired mass shooting at a Jewish centre in Brooklyn, planned to coincide with the anniversary of the Hamas attacks on 7 October.

Australasia

  • In *The Spectator Australia*, Douglas Murray examines the Paris Criminal Court’s sentencing of Hassan al-Banna’s grandson to 18 years’ imprisonment in absentia (25 March). The article focuses less on the downfall than on the rise: how did an intellectual of dubious credentials become the official ‘moderate Muslim’ of Western chancelleries and universities, at the cost of speaking with a forked tongue depending on his audience?

    The Spectator Australia · 11 April 2026

  • An analysis examines Canberra’s decision to revoke the visa of the Bangladeshi preacher Shaykh Ahmadullah and questions the ability of democracies to adopt a common approach towards foreign Islamist preachers.
