Biography
Yana Grinshpun is a linguist and discourse analyst. A senior lecturer at the Sorbonne Nouvelle University – Paris 3, her research focuses on the construction and functioning of media discourse, the ideologies conveyed by such discourse, and the argumentative techniques specific to propaganda discourse.
Her expertise covers the main concepts of media and political discourse analysis, the role of language in ideological constructions, the construction and dissemination of propaganda, the history of anti-Jewish discourse, the use of linguistic devices (syntactic structures, lexicon, polyphony, euphemisms, verbal morphology) and argumentative techniques. Since 2014, her work has focused particularly on the construction of anti-Jewish discourse, examining its historical, religious and political archives as well as its persistence and circulation in contemporary societies, at the intersection of discourse analysis, sociolinguistics and the history of representations.
Since 2021, she has been teaching at Paris-Cité University as part of the ‘Contemporary Forms of Control’ university diploma programme, where she teaches ideology as a discursive mechanism, the mechanisms of propaganda, and the analysis of political regimes through their discursive output. As co-founder of the Institut du Discours, an educational initiative dedicated to training in discourse analysis, she teaches the analysis of social, political and media discourse, and in 2018 created *Perditions Idéologiques*, an online blog-journal dedicated to the analysis of contemporary ideologies and their discursive manifestations. Her publications include the book *Ô: Between Language(s), Discourse and Writing* (Ophrys, 2008), the essay *The Making of Contemporary Propagandistic Discourse. How and why does it work?* (L'Harmattan, 2023), as well as *Hate in Black and White: The New Anti-Semitism from Stalin to Chomsky and up to 7 October* (FYP, 2025), which is directly devoted to her field of specialisation.
